The budget also requires the Department of Medical Assistance Services to conduct a study to further expand community-based services as well as develop a neuro-sciences unit to support individuals with neurobehavioral disorders. Neurobehavioral disorders are a group of conditions associated with brain injuries or diseases such as dementia, that affect one's behaviors, emotions, and learning processes. Confusion, aggression, and safety concerns can make it difficult to find suitable institutional placements for these individuals. This study would investigate ways to fund appropriate facility and community based care. The BIAV is gratified to see how far we have come; the advocacy efforts of brain injury service providers and individuals have also made this possible. BIAV will continue to advocate to ensure this funding is effectively implemented and allows people with brain injuries to live safely in their community. BIAV is here for what comes next. ### Founded in 1983 by families and concerned professionals, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia (BIAV) is the only statewide non-profit organization in Virginia exclusively dedicated to serving individuals with brain injury, their families and those that care for and about them. Over 10,000 people find help from BIAV each year. Our primary programs are: Information and Referral helpline, outreach and family support, education and training, public awareness, advocacy, and Camp Bruce McCoy. Visit www.biav.net to learn more.
