There is a said danger of apoplexy, epilepsy and paralysis from lead white and France had passed a law in 1909 banning the use of paints containing lead. As of 2018, there's an estimate 37 million homes and apartments with lead paint in the US. Imagine having this paint in your bathroom!

Paint manufacturing has come a long way with toxic substances like arsenic, mercury, and lead being unacceptable ingredients in paint. There has been attention on the effect of volatile organic compound (VOC) lately, though. An estimate of 10% of the ozone depleting substances in the urban US are said to be from VOC emissions, including household paints. There's a need to reduce emissions. Solventborne paints release a lot more VOCs than waterborne paints.

Trim, joinery and wet areas have been no-go areas for waterborne paints because of its tendency to soften under long exposure to moisture and poor block resistance but modern water-based enamels have addressed these challenges.

Low VOC paints are available now and are helping us move towards greener and cleaner paints and coating.
