MUMBAI, India - Sept. 7, 2022 - PRLog -- Gender-neutral uniforms will be used in the upcoming school year at Aditya Birla World Academy, a prestigious institution in Mumbai. The clothing options for students of any natal gender will be pants, skirts, or "skorts"(skirt+shorts).

To be seen as liberal, gender-neutral uniforms have been worn in schools for some time. In this instance, the girl's don trousers like the boys do.

However, the skirt is completely gone. Many people have praised the action since they consider it an effort to eliminate gender stereotypes. In addition, the initiative aims to inspire more and more girls to participate in sports. Ironically, several parents rejoiced that their daughters would no longer have to show their legs because of this.

More inclusive or non-discriminatory school attire becomes required as gender identity is becoming more widely understood, including "non-binary" identities,

in which people do not identify as either male or female, and "gender dysphoria," in which a person's biological gender and gender identity conflict.

In place of requiring the male uniform as the primary uniform, a UK school abolished its long-standing uniform regulations in 2016 and gave students the option of wearing a skirt or a pair of pants. However, an outcry broke out in the Roman Catholic city of Mexico City when the mayor of that city submitted a plan in 2019 allowing boys to wear skirts and girls to wear pants if they so desired.

It's interesting to observe how the uniform is changing its guiding principles. Whereas it once stood for an egalitarian classroom or a strict school system (with students frequently being sent home for an unironed uniform or a missing tie), its role is evolving. At the time, uniforms are becoming a means of self-expression.
