Media Advisory: 2022 Columbia University Military Ball

Hundreds of veterans, leaders, scholars, and guests will convene today, November 11, 2022, to celebrate Columbia University's distinguished student veteran community at the annual Military Ball.

NEW YORK - Nov. 11, 2022 - PRLog -- Established in 2010, the Military Ball is regarded as the premier event uniting veterans across the University community, with proceeds helping to underwrite academic and career transition programming for all veterans and military family members nationwide, financial aid for veteran students at Columbia University, and veteran student and alumni programming.

An American tradition dating back to the 19th century, this year's Military Ball will honor Lee C. Bollinger, President of Columbia University, as the 2022 recipient of the Peter J. Awn Lifetime Service Award for his extraordinary support for military veterans and service members.

Lee C. Bollinger became Columbia University's 19th president in 2002 and is the longest serving Ivy League president. He is Columbia's first Seth Low Professor of the University, a member of the Law School faculty, one of the nation's preeminent First Amendment scholars, and the author or co-editor of numerous books on freedom of speech and press.

President Bollinger has championed Columbia's recruitment of student military veterans. Under his leadership, Columbia's veteran enrollment has grown significantly and continues to lead the Ivy League by orders of magnitude. He also led the way in bringing the Naval ROTC back to Columbia, signing an official agreement in 2011 alongside then Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, after a four-decade-long absence following the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 2010. Most recently, his support was critical in the launch of the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration in 2017.

The event is co-hosted by Columbia Veterans, Military Veterans of Columbia University, the Columbia University Center for Veteran Transition and Integration, and the Columbia University School of General Studies.
