Follow on Google News | Old Saybrook Hosts First Ever 'National Wreaths Across America Day' Honoring VeteransThe town of Old Saybrook will host its first 'National Wreaths Across America Day/ Saturday, December 17 when 100-plus local volunteers will respectfully place wreaths to honor and remember the 689 veterans laid to rest at the town's four cemeteries
In addition to the volunteers laying these wreaths at veterans graves on Saturday morning, a ceremony will be held on the Town Green on Main Street, next to the Old Saybrook Fire Department (OSFD) Headquarters, 310 Main Street at 12 Noon. This special ceremony will feature the OSFD/OSPD Honor Guard, the OSHS Choir singing our National Anthem and God Bless America, and an Invocation and Benediction by OSFD Chaplain Geoff Sinibaldo. The public, especially veterans and their families, are strongly encouraged to attend this special ceremony to remember and honor our veterans during this holiday season. The Wreaths Across America initiative was started by Morrill and Karen Worcester, the owners of Worcester Wreaths in Maine. They began their generous initiative in 1992 with a trailer full of New England-grown wreaths decorated by volunteers, which Morrill Worcester laid at the graves of fallen soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. Over the years, the "Wreaths" mission has grown to encompass its current theme of "Remember, Honor, and Teach" the value of freedom in today's world. Since the initiative began, the "Wreaths" mission has laid 1 million wreaths by 2012 to remember and honor our veterans. During 2022, that already-impressive number will climb to over 2.6 million wreaths being placed at the graves of fallen soldiers in all 50 states and in 26 locations around the globe. "We're honored to be able to pay tribute again this year to Wreaths Across America and its message of honoring our veterans," says Max Sabrin, one of the event coordinators and a member of the all-volunteer OSFD Thanks to the incredibly generous donations by local citizens and businesses, an amazing 782 wreaths have been purchased this year for this Old Saybrook event on December 17th, with 82 of those wreaths getting credited toward our 2023 Wreaths Across America campaign in Old Saybrook. In addition, more than 100 volunteers have stepped up to place these remembrance wreaths on veterans graves at the town's four local cemeteries.
