ATLANTA - Dec. 8, 2022 - PRLog -- As a part of SEM Link's community-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programming, SEM Link launched STEM at The Ke'nekt with an Hour of Code workshop. The workshop took place on December 7th during Computer Science Education Week. The workshop conducted by SEM Link volunteers, for youth fourth grade and above, utilizing Google's CS First curriculum. STEM at The Ke'nekt is a part of SEM Link's community-based STEM programming hosting program activities at community spaces in neighborhoods in City of Atlanta and South Fulton County. The Ke'nekt Cooperative is a liberated third space that serves the Westview and West End Neighborhoods. "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." —Malcolm X. The Ke'nekt Cooperative is a hyper-local, cooperative space where the community gathers to exchange ideas.  We are excited to gather, learn about STEM through our partnership with SEM Link." states Makala L. Fields, Cultural Engagement Coordinator at The Ke'nekt.

SEM Link's partnership with The Ke'nekt was established in 2021 through its Experimental Design Program's STEM Literacy Program. SEM Link donated culturally relevant STEM books to the Jeffrey Mathis Free Community Library. In the August 2022, when SEM Link resumed its in-person programming, The Ke'nekt was one of community spaces that was selected to host programs. STEM at The Ke'nekt will provide youth in the surrounding neighborhoods with access to STEM programs which include STEM themed week celebrations, Teen Science Cafes, and family STEM events. SEM Link will also continue to donate culturally relevant STEM books to the library. "STEM at The Ke'nekt is about providing youth with STEM programming that is easily accessible to them. Traditional STEM spaces aren't always accessible to youth, especially youth of color, that is why community-based STEM programs such as this one is important for engaging youth in hands on STEM activities and exposing them to STEM and STEM careers".
