Dog Gurus' Robin Bennett Shares Tips on How to Handle Loose Dogs

NEW YORK - Feb. 2, 2023 - PRLog -- In a webinar presented by Ruffly Speaking Dog, The Dog Gurus' premier single-user online dog community, pet owners and professionals were able learn how to appropriately handle loose dogs and encounters on walks, and she's sharing those tips below.

"I sort of became obsessed with helping others learn canine body language," Robin "So, we obviously teach pet care facilities this all the time, but it's really easy for pet parents to learn as well…knowing what to do before you need to do it. Some of this is just really taking time to make sure that your dog has some basics down before you encounter other dogs."

Robin also shares the tip that you are to make sure your dog(s) are polite – not barking or jumping at another dog - and not pulling on the leash. Keeping yourself and your dog calm during a loose dog situation is a very important factor in keeping you both safe. Robin also stresses the importance of socialization and to properly socialize dogs of all breeds and all ages in order to avoid or minimize confrontation.

If the above doesn't work, Robin emphasizes that distracting a loose dog with loud noises – yelling, screaming, clapping your hands - is a good way to be able to leave the situation safely. Another tip is to always carry extra treats with you so that if the loud noises don't distract or deter the loose dog, you can take a handful of treats and throw the treats at the dog to allow time to get away from the dog.
