By: 4kira4moms 4Kira4Moms is an organization dedicated to improving birth outcomes in America founded by Charles Johnson after the untimely passing of his wife Kira in April 2016 from a routine c-section following an uncomplicated pregnancy. 4Kira4Moms continues to advocate for improved maternal health policies and regulations nationwide. Staggeringly, the United States has the highest maternal death rate with The state of Georgia having highest maternal death rate in the nation. In addition, Black women are dying four times as often as white women from childbirth and childbirth related complications. These overwhelming numbers were a call to action for the organization to build awareness, quickly–with events like this upcoming block party. This community block party is dedicated to educating and providing resources for Black women, fathers, and members of the community within its workshops: Celebration of Black Birth: Exploring Doula Care & Reclaiming Joy Before, During and After Pregnancy and Making Room for Black Fathers: To, Thru, & Beyond Childbirth. 4K4M founder Charles Johnson has dedicated his life to pursuing what his own family failed to receive – a safe, respectful & equitable maternal health outcome at one of the most recognized hospitals in America. "We are of the belief that every single mother in our country should have access to a safe dignified birthing experience. It's not a woman issue, it's not a black and white issue, it's a human rights issue." -Charles Johnson. Rain or shine, the festivities will take place at Atlanta's MLK Recreation Center located at 110 Hilliard St SE, Atlanta, GA 30312. Attendees will experience informative workshops, Doula resources, food, music, live performances, baby supply giveaways for the first 300 guests, complimentary, on-site therapy sessions and more. In addition to speakers Mayor Andre Dickens and Charles Johnson, fellow panelists include: Dr. Natalie Hernandez, Morehouse School of Medicine, Dr. Patrice L. Basanta-Henry, MD, Commissioner Greg Clay, Ky Lindbergh Executive Director of Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies of Georgia, and others. Advance registration is highly encouraged!
