PBJ Learning Announces New Online Human Trafficking Prevention and Awareness Course

Texas Hospitality Industry Awareness TX HB 390: New Training Program to Combat Human Trafficking in the Hospitality Industry

AUSTIN, Texas - April 18, 2023 - PRLog -- The Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has approved a new training program aimed at combating human trafficking in the hospitality industry. Texas Hospitality Industry Awareness TX HB 390 is an annual, required, human trafficking awareness and prevention training program for each employee of a hotel, motel, inn, or similar business operators with more than 10 rooms offering fee-based temporary lodging.

Exceeding the requirements of Texas' legislature mandate HB 309, it provides employees with an assessment-based certification upon completion. The training program, which can be completed in 30 minutes, is designed to provide employees with an overview of human trafficking, how to identify those most at risk, the differences between labor and sex trafficking in the hospitality industry, the employee's role in reporting and responding to human trafficking, and contact information for reporting human trafficking.

The mandatory training requirements are integrated into multiple learning modalities used throughout the interactive course, including mixed media, audio, video, graphics, descriptive stories, downloadable resources, written lessons, interactive activities, pre- and post-course assessments, and practice tests.

The Texas Attorney General approved the program on April 13, 2023.

Employers are required to ensure that the training is completed by new employees within 90 days of their hiring date. The final certificate exam challenges students to demonstrate mastery of the material.

"The Texas Hospitality Industry Awareness TX HB 390 training program is a crucial step in the fight against human trafficking in the hospitality industry. By providing employees with the tools and knowledge necessary to identify and report trafficking, we can help save lives and prevent this heinous crime from occurring," said PBJ Learning's co-founder, Billy Joe Cain.

The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 390 requiring the OAG to create signage and approve training for the hospitality industry. It seeks to provide additional opportunities for human trafficking to be reported to law enforcement by requiring human trafficking training for workers directly employed by certain commercial lodging establishments. This annual training requirement applies to commercial lodging establishments of 10 or more rooms.
