The City of Morrow Kicks off it's The 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration

ATLANTA - May 8, 2023 - PRLog -- The City of Morrow is excited to offer this celebration in honor of Juneteenth, the day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The event will take place, Saturday June 10, 2023 from 4pm-11pm, fireworks began at 9pm. The location is The District in Morrow, GA Exit 233 I-75 behind Southlake Mall. This family-friendly event promises to be a fun-filled day with activities for all ages. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to relax and enjoy the festivities. Food vendors and food trucks will be on-site to satisfy cravings, and a Kid Zone will offer exciting games, face painting, and other activities to keep the young ones entertained. Arts and crafts vendors will also be in attendance for those looking to browse unique and handmade items.

History of Juneteenth

Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name "Juneteenth" references the date of the holiday, combining the words "June" and "nineteenth. "On June 19, 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger led the Union Soldiers to Galveston, TX, to announce the end of the war and the freedom of all enslaved people. The day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law after the efforts of Lula Briggs Galloway, Opal Lee, and others.

Festival Entertainment

The event will be hosted by Canton Jones and features performer Marshall Charloff and The Purple Experience in addition to Tyler Little, Erica Dawson, Bonita Jolane and more. The 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration is free for all, and the City of Morrow welcomes everyone to attend and celebrate this important day in American history. We hope to see you there!
