SGS Looks at NEWMOA's Proposed PFAS Prevention Model Legislation

GENEVA - June 8, 2023 - PRLog -- SGS, the world's leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS detailing a proposed model legislation to regulate per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumer products issued by the Northeast Waste Management Officials' Association (NEWMOA).

PFAS are defined in the draft legislation as, "all members of the class of fluorinated organic chemicals containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom." This is in alignment with other US state regulations.

It is hoped the draft legislation will help jurisdictions develop a more consistent approach to PFAS and PFAS-containing products. Following the concept of the toxics in packaging, US states would be able to adopt the model, making it legally binding under their jurisdiction and setting in place notification and prohibition requirements.

SGS has published SafeGuardS 059.23 to give stakeholders a better understanding of the draft model legislation. The SafeGuardS includes a table detailing the notification and prohibition requirements and their effective dates.
