Innovative Product Makes Anyone a Houseplant Genius via Home Automation and IOT

MINNEAPOLIS - June 14, 2023 - PRLog -- he Sprout Houseplant Tender, a home automation device that ensures thriving plants, launched on Kickstarter – offering an innovative approach to houseplant care. Houseplants cared for by Sprout are guaranteed to thrive.

Sprout monitors a user's home environment, compares it to a plant-care database with exact requirements for hundreds of houseplants.

That allows Sprout to do two essential things:

1. Automatically waters plants. And it does so at exactly the right time; for an east-facing plant, that's at dawn; for west, that's just before full afternoon sun.
2. Delivers custom plant-care advice. Sprout is an automated houseplant coach with expert, advice personalized to the user's home.

If a user's plant isn't getting enough sun, or too little humidity, they'll be alerted via app, text or email. Sprout also coaches users on how to boost humidity or where to move their houseplant.

In addition to helping houseplant owners care for the plants they have, Sprout empowers houseplant lovers with knowledge about their home environment. With that knowledge, plant owners can get only the plants that they know will thrive in their home.

This keeps plant owners from killing plants or having sad, ugly plants. But it also removes wasted carbon, energy, and water usage spent growing, shipping, and storing those plants along the houseplant supply chain.

Sprout has been a labor of love for founder Nick Upton for his own plants. The concept has proven very successful and previous devices have successfully nurtured plants for years.

"We're taking the guesswork out of houseplants with scientific methods," said Upton. "I'm a lifelong plant lover, and Sprout cares for plants better than me."

In one test, he paired two new baby rubber plants together, one with Sprout and one without. A year later, the automated plant was larger, greener and ready to go in a larger pot. The un-automated plant was struggling.

Open-source heritage

Sprout started on open-source and DIY computing foundations. To honor that heritage, plant hackers will have full access to Sprout to make it their own. In geek speak, that means Sprout can be programmed with just a USB cable using Arduino.
