Remote work stats suggest class disparity, says CEO

AUSTIN, Texas - July 11, 2023 - PRLog -- Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that Americans who have a college degree are more likely to get remote work opportunities than those with just a high school diploma. The CEO of a resource site dedicated to remote work says this could indicate class disparity, but maintains that jobseekers with diplomas should not be discouraged.

RemoteWorker.jobs is an online jobs board and resource website for remote workers, remote work jobseekers, and hiring managers, employers and HR personnel seeking to recruit and hire the top talent for remote positions. Its CEO, Joseph Boll, said: "What these results could suggest is a class disparity when it comes to remote work. Traditionally white-collar workers are more likely to have college degrees and formal education, and thereby can be more likely to have jobs that can be done remotely. Whereas blue-collar jobs that are manual may not have this option, and that can contribute to the statistics that we see today."

According to the Labor Bureau, "Workers with higher levels of education were more likely to work at home than were those who had less education. Among workers age 25 and over, 54% of employed persons with a bachelor's degree or higher performed some work at home on days worked, compared with 18% of those with a high school diploma and no college."

However, Boll also says this could be an issue within white-collar businesses as well. "Advocates for remote work, like us, have long cautioned businesses to avoid unintentionally creating disparity with who they allow to work from home," he says. "Only offering remote work to managers and executives instead of to everyone is something that should be avoided to level the playing field for everyone."

At the same time, he encourages those seeking remote opportunities to not be discouraged by the statistics. RemoteWorker.jobs notes that equivalent work experience is often just as good as formal education, and there are dozens of entry-level remote opportunities available for new graduates looking to land a job that will give them work-life balance and flexibility. Jobseekers can also take advantage of online training courses to boost their resumes and prove their talents even without a college degree.
