The call came in on a Friday night: "Aly's missing."

Author Donna Stone's 19-year-old niece Aly disappeared on Dec. 10, 2021. Her unlocked car, phone, and laptop were found at Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport. Records show tickets were purchased in her name to multiple destinations, and security footage showed three travelers.

Aly arrived in Canada, but why? Where? With whom? The search area spanned 3.8 million square miles with multiple points of entry, and the police were limited in the help they could provide. Because of Aly's age, she was considered an adult and was free to travel wherever she wanted. Laws designed to protect young people end up giving human traffickers almost unfettered access to 18- to 20-year-olds.

Aly's young adult status ended up separating her from her parents, while deepening her relationship with a potential trafficker.

The family's worries escalated when a trafficking organization estimated that Aly might fetch $100,000. She looked much younger than 19, and customers of human traffickers are willing to pay more for a youthful appearance.

The outcome of Aly's disappearance "left a scar on her mother's heart that will never leave," said the author.
