Black Media Awards Gala Returns For the Fourth Year To The River City

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - July 24, 2023 - PRLog -- The fourth annual celebration of black history in the media is returning to the River City to honor those that continue to publish stories that matter for and about our community. Organized by Obi Umunna from Umunna Legal Group, this event aims to recognize individuals who embody truth and leadership within black media. The late Journalist, Activist and former Ken Knight Award recipient Ben Frazier will also be honored at the event this year, highlighting his many contributions to journalistic culture. Sponsoring the Ken Knight Awards is VyStar™, bringing together professionals from the Northeast Florida media industry as they pay tribute to their fellow colleagues.

Ken Knight, the namesake of the awards, is recognized for his role in advocating for increased representation of African Americans in broadcasting. He pioneered a movement in which African Americans demanded greater airtime for their music and announcements. Additionally, Knight played a significant role in training and preparing other African Americans for careers in broadcasting through various training programs. Notably, he created the Ken Knight Show, which holds the distinction of being the first African American television show in Jacksonville.

Nominations for award recipients will begin on July 20th until August 9th.  Media members are encouraged to nominate themselves and colleagues and will also be open to the general public to nominate. Nominees can be active or retired participants of the African-American media (including but not limited to journalists, representatives from tv, radio, newspapers, and social media influencers, etc). Winners will be selected by committee of former winners.

This year's host will be Ken Knight Award recipient Dawn Lopez. The celebration will take place at WJCT Studios at 6:30 on September 7, 2023. RSVP is required for entry and reserved for members of the media only. Nomination can be placed at https://www.kenknightawards.com/#nominate.
