Michigan Philharmonic returning to Port Austin

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - July 25, 2023 - PRLog -- The Michigan Philharmonic is returning to Huron County with a very special live performance featuring the likes of Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Incredibles, Captain America and much more.

Music lovers from all over "the Thumb" in Michigan will get to experience the outdoor concert, "Movie Icons and Superheroes," as the Philharmonic soars into Port Austin's Gallup Park on Saturday, Aug. 19 beginning at 4 p.m.

This is the second appearance by the Michigan Philharmonic as part of the Port Austin Artist-in-Residence Program.  Led by longtime Music Director and Conductor Nan Washburn, the free concert will offer up a fun mix of movie music with a nod to famous movie icons too.

According to Beth Stewart, executive director of the Michigan Phil, although it is based in Plymouth, "loves to travel" and take its programs to communities around the state.

"The community of Port Austin welcomed us with open arms last summer and we can't wait to return," added Stewart.

Summer resident and Director of the Port Austin Artist-in-Residence Program, Cindy Patrick, said, "Port Austin is proud to host this free outdoor concert with the support of state and local arts organizations."

Event sponsors include the Michigan Humanities Council, Michigan Council for the Arts, and the Thumb Arts Guild, along with community support from the Port Austin DDA, Port Austin Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Agri Valley Communications Osentoski Realty, Bird Creek Farms, Chris & Amanda Kuzak and generous personal donations from the wonderful people of Port Austin."

A selection honoring a very special local veteran will also be presented during the concert by John Upthegrove and William Mayes who will act as emcee.

Mayes, the former executive director of the Michigan Association of School Administrators, now a Port Austin resident, enjoyed the performance last year and is excited about the Port Austin Artist in Residence Program bringing the Philharmonic back again this year.

According to Mayes, "as part of this program the Michigan Philharmonic Orchestra performed in the Pavilion of Gallup Park last year and the reaction of the community was electric. The orchestra's performance brought tears to many in the crowd. Thank you Michigan Philharmonic for once again including the Thumb's Huron County as a stop on your summer tour."
