COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Aug. 17, 2023 - PRLog -- Sancharaka Udawa, the largest travel trade fair in Sri Lanka, took place on the 19th and 20th of May for the 10th time after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic. It is a moment of pride to acknowledge that the founder of the Sancharaka Udawa concept is the Managing Director of NKAR Travels, the premier travel agency in Sri Lanka. This is during his tenure as the President of the Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO). This achievement is the result of a collaborative effort by all committee members, past and present, who have worked tirelessly to ensure the continued success of this trade show for a decade.

During the grand opening ceremony of the 10th edition, the current organizing committee made sure to express their gratitude to Mr. Nilmin Nanayakkara for his exceptional initiative by presenting him with a token of appreciation.

Sancharaka Udawa is Sri Lanka's largest travel and tourism fair. It is held every year and brings together industry officials and professionals onto a single platform. The exhibition showcases the latest developments, trends, services, and products in the tourism and travel sectors.

The current situation of the tourism industry in Sri Lanka has been impacted by various factors. Three years ago, the industry experienced a decline of 18% in tourist numbers following the Easter Sunday bombings in April. Since then, Sri Lanka has been working towards recovery. In 2021, there was a significant reduction in tourist arrivals, with approximately 194,500 tourists visiting the country, representing a 92% decrease from peak numbers in 2018. However, there are more promising estimates for 2022, with the government expecting around 496,400 arrivals as of August.

Despite the challenges, the tourism industry in Sri Lanka is making efforts to revive and recover. The government has been implementing measures to attract tourists and promote the country as a safe and desirable destination. Sri Lanka earned around 800 million USD in foreign exchange revenue from tourism in the first seven months of 2023, with over 750,000 tourists visiting the country during that period.

Overall, while the tourism industry in Sri Lanka has faced challenges in recent years, efforts are being made to revive and promote tourism in the country.

It is worth noting that the tourism industry in Sri Lanka has faced setbacks due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the economic and fuel crisis that followed it. However, the industry is gradually reopening to international tourists as restrictions ease and safety measures are put in place.
