'The Music Box' by Joanna Thorn

The Music Box tells the tale of a ballerina, beautiful and mysterious, who dances her way into the heart of another who is captivated by her dance, her essence and all of her ways. They fall in love which is ultimately the curse that traps her into the music box, where her fate is to remain inside the box where she will dance forever.

It's a tragic love story of two souls that can never be, but still there is a comfort in that her music box is now her sanctuary where she will remain safely inside her world of song and dance. She lives on always, and her lover will hold onto the music box, remaining with her always, knowing that he only has to open the box to find the love and comfort he misses.

The inspiration for this poem comes from a real life ballerina ornament that had been placed in my room at my parents' house. I spent some months living there at the end of 2019 and the first few months of 2020 due to an injury and later an operation on my leg, and the ballerina became a comfort every evening when I went to bed. I thought about the ballerina a lot over time and continued to do so after I moved back out of my parents' house, and I wondered about her story and who she might be if she were real, and this scenario formed in my mind and continued to grow until I was able to write this poem which came together really easily alongside the music. I'm ever so happy with how this has turned out which firstly stemmed from a comfort and later a curiosity. The ballerina now lives with me where she remains curse free!
