Where There's A Will, There's A Way by Carl J. Barger

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Nov. 3, 2023 - PRLog -- Inspirational Memoir Provides Hope Even in the Darkest of Times

Carl J. Barger's memoir Where There's a Will, There's a Way was written to inspire those struggling with poverty and not knowing what the future holds for them. He writes of growing up during the Great Depression in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains in Cleburne County, Arkansas.

"My story begins in the small community of Higden, Arkansas, with a population of 122 people … Things have changed drastically from the day I was born on August 17, 1943. In 1940, the little town of Higden had a railroad depot which supported the M&NA railroad which passed through Higden. The town was supported by a general store, two small grocery stores, two gas stations, a blacksmith shop, three churches, a motel, and a four-room schoolhouse."

He relates his struggles as the ninth child of 11 children, experiencing not only poverty, but a thirst for knowledge and understanding, and always dreaming of a better life.

The author remembers lying awake at night listening to his mother crying, as she wondered where the family's next meal was coming from. He includes the people who made a difference in his life, those who challenged him, motivated him, and influenced the man he became.

"Ma was a crafty lady who had been taught well by her father and mother … She learned to cook, sew, plow, hoe, pick cotton, do housework, and dry apples and peaches for fried pies. She worked like a man. She could plow behind a mule as well as most men. She could also pull her weight in using a crosscut saw for cutting logs and firewood for the fireplace, kitchen cook stove, and the big iron potbelly heating stove that heated our house."
