Follow on Google News | Downriver nonprofit working to build small homes for homeless veterans."By: Downriver for Veterans The biggest need right now is housing for veterans. Last year 33,000 veterans were homeless across the country. For the past seven years, Downriver for Veterans has set a goal for a small home community. They had secured several land options over the years, but none of the property turned out to be viable for the project. In the beginning of November 2023, the group secured 40 acres of donated land and they can now create a village of small homes. Their concept of a community to support veterans services is now underway. "The idea that a veteran who needs help whether it is an addiction or mental health, would be afforded help in a community center with services surrounded by a community of homes. Once the vet is stable enough to live back on his/her own, they would have an opportunity to have their own home." Said Ann Rudisill, DFV Founder. If you can imagine a golf course community, minus the golf course, this is what DFV has in mind to make the project a viable, safe community for veterans. "We have carpenters, plumbers and corporate partners who have already committed to providing services at no charge," explained Rudisill, "with the land secured, we can move forward to fundraise what is needed to make this happen." "We are currently paying to have veterans stay in their home, it's just not sustainable."
