IEEE Milwaukee Section Public Library Grant

WAUWATOSA, Wis. - Jan. 22, 2024 - PRLog -- The Milwaukee section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) presented their "Science Kits For Public Libraries" (SKPL) grant to the Wauwatosa Public Library.

The SKPL grant is an IEEE program created to promote STEM at the local library.

The Wauwatosa Public Library is the sixth recipient of the IEEE Milwaukee SKPL grant.

"Teen Circulating STEM Kits" will be provided for checkout at the Wauwatosa location. These will support the exploration of foundational engineering concepts, robotics, cognitive learning, and electronic circuitry.

Unique to this year's grant submission, the Wauwatosa Public Library will analyze circulation statistics and include a QR code that links to a survey within the kit's contents. This will help to determine the rate of success.

Library director Peter Loeffel mentioned, "As part of the Milwaukee County Federated Library System, cardholders, no matter their home library, have the ability to borrow materials including these science kits. These types of diverse collections are a perk of being part of a library consortium."

"Hands-on materials provide the best method to learn in the field of science and technology," said Chris Lambrou (Metro MLS CIO and IEEE Milwaukee Chair). "We are lucky to have great minds at the local libraries that help IEEE support this vision."

Funding for the IEEE Milwaukee Science Kits for Public Libraries grant is provided from donations within the Greater Milwaukee area. Primary funding for this SKPL grant was graciously provided by Eaton - a power management company with a Milwaukee presence.

"Our goal is to continue to promote STEM-related activities that foster the growth of inquisitive minds and an interest in engineering. We strongly believe the public library is the perfect conduit to deliver this freely to the local community."

In 1995, WPL became the first public library in Milwaukee County to offer access to the Internet. Digital books became available to the public in 2006.
