IEEE-Milwaukee Awards Grants to Public Libraries

MILWAUKEE - Dec. 17, 2019 - PRLog -- The Milwaukee Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) awarded the IEEE "Science Kits for Public Libraries" Grant to the South Milwaukee Public Library.

South Milwaukee is the first recipient of the grant offered from the IEEE-Milwaukee section with a goal that science kits could be checked out as easily as a library book. The $1,700 grant will support the library's "STEAM: For Kids of All Ages" project.

STEAM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics, fosters problem- solving and creative thinking. Each of STEAM's five (5) subjects share a common approach and focus. Thanks to IEEE funding, South Milwaukee's science kits will allow children and families to experience and learn about STEAM together, as a fun activity. Promoting a deeper understanding in the five (5) subjects while allowing the ability to explore new science concepts at home.

The kits will be circulated to teachers and organizations increasing the number of people exposed to the STEAM concept. By circulating the kits to schools and other organizations, the South Milwaukee Library will introduce students (K-12) to new areas of interest and career opportunities they might not have thought possible for them.

The IEEE-Milwaukee Science Kits for Public Libraries grant is funded by generous donations within its community. Primary funding and support for the 2019 grant was graciously provided by Eaton.

In 2020, the IEEE-Milwaukee section will begin the process of evaluating local library submissions, channeling donations and awarding grants at years end.
