The annual Spirit of Children campaign has raised more than $500,000 for Golisano Children's Hospital since 2007. Spirit of Children focuses on making hospitals less scary for children and their families by partnering with Child Life Departments working to create more comfortable hospital environments. With donations raised in Spirit Halloween stores and from vendor partners, they continue empowering Child Life programs and roles, including:
"We feel a deep sense of pride and privilege in our ability to support the critical work of Child Life at 159 partner hospitals across North America through Spirit of Children," said Rick Tereo, director of Spirit of Children Foundation. "Our fundraising efforts enable Child Life Specialists to provide therapeutic and emotional healing, education, and coping to young patients, while doctors and nurses focus on medical treatment." The Child Life program at Golisano Children's Hospital aims to keep children's lives as normal as possible while they receive essential lifesaving medical care. This allows children to go through difficult situations and process the information, thoughts and feelings that accompany those situations at their own pace. Child Life offers services such as activities in the playroom, teen lounge and bedside; preparation for medical procedures, tests and surgeries; educational services for homebound students, and special events, such as pet therapy and clowns.
