MILWAUKEE - April 25, 2024 - PRLog -- Meet Jemma Avalon, unconventional mage-in-training, who longs to return to Everland Bay, her ancestral homeland, and find a way to join the renowned magical research institute there, like the women in her family before her.

Daughter of a gentle part elf-fae mother and a father with fiery dragon blood, Jemma is working at a major museum in DC following her mother's sudden death, where magic is all but outlawed. Her father wants her to assimilate and live without magic, but Jemma is determined to fully embrace her heritage.

When an ordinary day at the museum takes an extraordinary turn, Jemma is rocketed to an Everland Bay Institute under violent siege, where dark-arts mages threaten everything important to her. Once there, she joins forces, working feverishly to save Everland Bay from crumbling and in so doing, finds a path to her own strength and her heart's true home.

The first in a new series, Lynne Shaner's debut novel, Journey to Everland Bay, is a departure from the dystopian novels that have dominated the science fiction and fantasy genres over the last eight years.

"I found myself interested in the idea of a young woman who doesn't have an easy path but keeps reaching toward her future," says Shaner. "I couldn't easily set it in the current world because of the restrictions and harms of cultural norms, patriarchy in particular."

The world of Everland Bay created by Shaner is egalitarian and patriarchy-free. "With that simple truth as a given in this world, the characters are free to do and be much more than they ever could in this world we live in."

A protopia, as definited by political philosopher and sociologist Hanzi Freinacht, Journey to Everland Bay acknowledges that terrible things happen, but is confident in the overriding and inherent wisdom of progress to create a beautiful new future out of those things which have fallen.

Along the way are dragons, gryphons, pegasi the size of walnuts, faeries that live inside pockets, magical knitting, and books that fly. The real drivers, though, are friendship, family, and community.

Lynne Shaner has been captivated by fantasy, myth, and fairy tales since childhood, when her mother first read Charlotte's Web to her. She lives in Wisconsin close enough to Lake Michigan to walk to the shoreline every day. Her work has appeared in various literary magazines. She holds a master's degree in creative writing/fiction from Johns Hopkins.
