SAN JOSE, Calif. - July 21, 2024 - PRLog -- The Tenacious Group, in partnership with the City of San Jose, offers our 7th Annual Summer Cooking Camps at Latino College Preparatory Academy and Yerba Buena High School, where 61% of students come from low-income families. These cooking camps are part of our week-long Summer Environmental Health initiative, providing a safe environment for youth to stay active and engaged in positive activities. The Cooking Camps introduce students to basic culinary skills through fun, interactive learning experiences focused on healthy eating. Each day, participants work with fresh, whole ingredients to prepare nutritious and delicious meals. By exposing youth to new foods and tasty recipes, we aim to build their confidence in the kitchen and encourage healthy eating.

Executive Director Adam Ybarra says, "Our cooking camps serve as an excellent pathway to incorporating health and wellness practices for climate adaptation, facilitating both personal and community transformations. By engaging in cooking with organic ingredients, plant-based foods, and providing stainless steel water bottles to each student, the camps help reduce plastic water bottle usage." A report by the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health states that more than one million bottles of water are sold every minute worldwide. The average American uses 167 bottles per year but only recycles 38. Ybarra adds, "By offering opportunities, resources, and support, we can create healthy and vibrant ecosystems that empower youth of color to successfully advocate for and transform their communities."

Throughout the cooking camp, students gain confidence and independence by following recipes, measuring ingredients, and cooking meals on their own. This sense of accomplishment boosts their self-esteem and fosters a sense of independence. Additionally, each kitchen utensil, cooking apparatus the student used throughout the week, they take home.
