Retired Eastbourne doctor's new book on modern life

EASTBOURNE, U.K. - July 31, 2024 - PRLog -- Retired Eastbourne doctor George John became an overnight sensation with the warts-and-all accounts of his experiences within the health service.

His books, Your Lives in Our Hands and Life Stories and Hilarious Anecdotes, were met with a lengthy string of glowing reviews.

Now George, who is better known as Dr Jay to readers and former patients, has branched out in fiction – with similar success.

The 73-year-old grandfather's latest work, Susan's Romance, is a poignant and heartfelt exploration of modern society.

Critics have already called the three interwoven short stories 'masterfully crafted', 'gripped from start to finish' and 'impactful'.

George, whose favourite authors include Thomas Hardy, Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, said: "Susan's Romance is three stories of love and affection between men and women.

"There's the incident at the traffic lights, the goings on in the mysterious green room, a conniving and greedy ex- girlfriend, a scheming home help, and the woeful consequences of Ketamine abuse.

While love is a theme that binds George's novella, the retired doctor doesn't shy away from complex and difficult issues.

Susan's Romance explores the consequences of drug misuse, the impacts of dementia, and the circumstances surrounding depression and suicide.

While George's earlier books were a natural extension from his successful medical career, his side swerve towards more creative writing can be traced all the way back to an influential professor in his Indian homeland.

George, who is a member of his local church's creative writing group, explained: "When I was studying for my chemistry degree in 1966 I was entered into an intercollegiate essay competition called the Peace Essay contest, conducted by the International Lions Club.

"I was the winner of the first prize – and won a total of 70 rupees and a certificate of merit from the Lions Club.

"That was the first amount of money I ever earned and I was thrilled.

"Samuel Thomas, the brilliant Professor who taught us English encouraged me to write that essay.

"If it hadn't been for him I don't think I would have had the interest in creative writing.

"I will always remember his advice; to research the subject thoroughly before I write."
