Follow on Google News | Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley in search of volunteers for an exciting reading program supportDedicated volunteers can help children improve their reading skills and develop a love of books
By: Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley "This program is an exciting opportunity for our community to share the joy of reading with our students," said Steve Tate, a member of the BGCSV Board of Directors. Steve is collaborating with Morgan Hill Mayor Mark Turner to establish this as part of the mayor's Read20 (20 minutes a day) initiative. "Sixty-two percent of students attending schools we serve are below grade level proficiency standards in the English language. By volunteering just ninety minutes of time, you can help a child improve their reading skills, build confidence, and develop a lifelong love of books." The Morgan Hill Boys & Girls Club is looking for dedicated volunteers to join its Reading Program, designed to support K-3 readers who are currently below their grade's reading level. Each volunteer will be paired with a young reader who could use one-on-one guidance. The program starts with a fun, 10-minute ice breaker to build a connection with the volunteer and their reading buddy. Then, volunteers get to share the joy of reading by guiding their young reader through a book. At the end of each session, volunteers can chat about the book and encourage their reader to express their own thoughts. Plus, at each session, the young reader gets to take a book home to start their own library. Volunteers will read with children on Thursdays from 4-5:30pm at the Morgan Hill Clubhouse located at 17666 Crest Avenue in Morgan Hill.
