Follow on Google News | Celebrating 45 Years of Frankenmuth's Holz Brücke Covered BridgeBy: Bavarian Inn The Holz Brücke Covered Bridge was conceived by Tiny Zehnder, a visionary leader of the Bavarian Inn Corporation. As the town grew in the late 1970s, the need for expanded parking became apparent. Tiny envisioned a bridge that would honor Frankenmuth's German heritage while showcasing old-world craftsmanship. Construction of the bridge began in 1979 under the skilled hands of renowned bridge builder Milton Graton. Utilizing traditional hand tools and methods, the project took two years to complete, culminating in a remarkable feat where twin oxen, Buck and Bright, moved the 230-ton structure into place in January 1980. Spanning 239 feet long, 28 feet wide, and standing 14 feet high, the bridge is crafted from Douglas fir timber and features an authentic covered design that protects it from the elements while paying homage to European traditions. The wooden beams are secured with wooden pegs, reflecting a craftsmanship that remains rare today. Today, the Holz Brücke is an integral part of Frankenmuth's identity, drawing locals and visitors alike to admire its beauty and take in the breathtaking views of the river and town. It serves as a vital connection point for the nearby Bavarian Inn Restaurant and Bavarian Inn Lodge, where generations of families have created memories. To celebrate this remarkable anniversary, the Covered Bridge Shop will host a FREE family-fun event, the 'Bridge Birthday Bash,' on September 28, 2024, from 12 PM to 6 PM. The festivities will include live music, food trucks, yard games, face painting, bounce house, and activities for children. Attendees can also enjoy cocktails from the outdoor bar while soaking in the scenic views. The celebration doesn't end there! Throughout the year, visitors can stop by the Covered Bridge Shop to discover exclusive bridge-related items, allowing everyone to take a piece of Frankenmuth's history home. Join the community in celebrating the Holz Brücke Covered Bridge's 45th year. This landmark stands not just as a structure of wood but as a testament to Frankenmuth's enduring charm, tradition, and quality craftsmanship. Whether you're exploring the bridge's history or enjoying the festivities, it remains a meaningful part of the town's story.
