Follow on Google News | Michigan Walk & Roll to School DayStudents celebrate Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9. There is still time for Michigan schools to register and participate in the worldwide event.
The event is being promoted by Safe Routes to School (SRTS) at Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF), a federally legislated program administered by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). SRTS programs are designed to make it safe, convenient, and fun for children and their families to walk, roll, and bike to school, as well as ease traffic jams, reduce air pollution, and unite neighborhoods. "Walk and Roll to School Day is a great way for schools and communities to encourage healthy living," said MFF President and CEO Amy Ghannam. "Hosting a Walk & Roll to School event offers an opportunity for students and families to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routine through active transportation." The event emphasizes the sense of joy and adventure students experience by being active on the school commute. It also raises awareness about important issues like increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. "Walk and Roll to School Day demonstrates to students, families, and local stakeholders what is possible in their communities," WR2SD events can be as straightforward or as grand as schools want to plan — from simply inviting students to walk to school, to hosting a pedestrian parade, or organizing a walking school bus. "Our team enjoys working with schools and communities as they plan their Walk and Roll to School Day events," There is still time for schools to register for the event, and all registered schools receive planning assistance from MFF SRTS program staff.
