Follow on Google News | Metamorphosis: Solo Exhibition by Aggie ArmstrongBy: Revart, LLC In Metamorphosis, Armstrong invites viewers into her reflective journey, shaped by over 30 years of living in Canada as a Filipino immigrant. Armstrong grapples with the tension between her Filipino heritage and Canadian identity. Is she truly Canadian? Or is she still, at her core, Filipino? Her questions of belonging have only amplified with the birth of her daughter. Has she shared enough of her Filipino heritage, or is it slipping away? These questions have led her to revisit her memories, though she wonders if time has romanticized the past and blurred the lines of her identity. Armstrong's paintings embody these struggles. Her vibrant portraits of women exude confidence through posture, yet their eyes are always obscured. The stories behind these mysterious figures beckon to be uncovered, resonating with personal memories and shared experiences. Armstrong's art is an invitation—it calls us to participate in our own metamorphosis as we navigate the fluidity of identity and self-perception. Born in Manila, Philippines, Armstrong moved to Ontario, Canada in 1990. She earned her BA in Fine Arts from Western University in London, Canada, and has since pursued a full-time career as an artist and creative entrepreneur. Her works are featured in private collections both nationally and globally. In 2023, she was commissioned to create the official poster for The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario. In 2024, Armstrong co-founded ARTWRK/, an online gallery platform supporting artists across North America. Armstrong is a dynamic multimedia artist whose work delves into the layers of female consciousness. She is heavily influenced by her cross-cultural upbringing as a Third Culture Individual—someone who has spent a significant portion of their formative years in a culture different from their parents. This cross-cultural experience has greatly shaped her identity and creative voice, which she expresses through bold compositions, vivid colors, and intricate hand-stitched embroidery. Her work is both a personal reflection and an exploration of broader themes like identity, belonging, and the intersectional female experience. We invite you to experience Metamorphosis, an exhibition that delves into questions of the self, inspiring each viewer to embark on their own journey of self-discovery and transformation.
