A fresh interpretation of the Randy Newman tune was recorded in North Carolina, during a concert benefiting victims of Hurricane Helene.
Dr. Samuel Waymon's arrangement, in four movements, of Randy Newman's "Baltimore", was recorded live last fall at a concert benefiting victims of Hurricane Helene – the tropical cyclone that caused catastrophic damage and numerous deaths throughout the Southeastern United States. "Baltimore" was the opening number in a memorable performance delivered by Waymon and his "Magic Man Band". The group headlined the PHP: People Helping People concert presented at the Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort (Tryon International) This song was selected, says Dr. Waymon, "because it is reflective of the soul of Baltimore and other communities across this great country – that soul being its P-E-O-P-L-E." The importance of this effort, he continued, is "to educate and inspire people around the world around the importance of how L-O-V-E can be a force to uplift and protect our families in times of need such as was witnessed in in the wake of Hurricane Helene – or in the aftermath of recent fires in the Los Angeles area." In the days following the hurricane, Tryon International served as a regional command and distribution center - providing hot meals, telecommunications, lodging, clothing, water, toiletries and other essentials to families, individuals and organizations throughout the Carolina Foothills. "It has been a great pleasure to work with this talented artist, civil rights crusader and entertainment industry icon, as he builds upon the legacy of his extremely accomplished family and conjures memories of his most celebrated sister, the late Eunice Waymon (Nina Simone)", says co-producer Melvin H. Cox. A native of Tryon, North Carolina, Samuel Waymon (80) is the youngest of eight children born to Rev. Mary Kate (Irvin) Waymon (1901 – 2001) and her husband, John Divine Waymon (1898 – 1972). Waymon's long career has brought success in many areas of the music and entertainment industries.
