What is a Jaw Crusher: What You Need to Know

ALABASTER, Ala. - Feb. 19, 2025 - PRLog -- A jaw crusher is a widely - used primary crushing machine in the mining, construction, and recycling industries. Its main function is to break large - sized materials into smaller pieces.

Jaw Crusher Theory

The working theory of a jaw crusher is based on the principle of extrusion. It has two jaws, a fixed jaw and a movable jaw. The material is fed into the crushing chamber between these two jaws. As the movable jaw, driven by an eccentric shaft, moves back and forth, it compresses the material against the fixed jaw, applying high pressure to break the material through extrusion and shear forces.

Application of Jaw Crusher
  1. Mining: It is used to crush various ores at the beginning of the mining process, preparing them for further beneficiation and processing. For example, in gold mining, large - scale gold - bearing rocks are first crushed by jaw crushers.
  2. Construction: Produces construction aggregates. It can crush natural stones like granite and limestone into different - sized particles for making concrete, asphalt, and road - building materials. Also, it recycles construction waste such as demolished concrete and bricks.
  3. Industrial and Chemical Fields: Processes raw materials like coke and slag, making them suitable for subsequent industrial or chemical reactions.

Working of a Jaw Crusher / How Does a Jaw Crusher Work

When the jaw crusher starts working, the motor drives the V - belt pulley to make the eccentric shaft rotate. As the eccentric shaft rotates, the moving jaw, which is connected to the eccentric shaft through a toggle plate, moves in a reciprocating motion. The material enters the crushing cavity from the feed inlet. During the forward movement of the moving jaw, the material is crushed between the two jaws. When the moving jaw moves backward, the crushed material with a smaller size can be discharged from the bottom of the crushing chamber. The size of the final product can be adjusted by changing the gap between the two jaws, allowing for flexibility in meeting different production requirements.
