Philharmonic's 'Romantic' concert spotlights composer and violinist from Michigan

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Feb. 26, 2025 - PRLog -- A Grammy-nominated composer and a well-respected violinist – both from Michigan – will take to the stage with the Michigan Philharmonic during its upcoming "Brahms and Belen" concert on Sunday, March 9.

Planned for 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Plymouth, the Philharmonic's performance features the Midwest debut of Chinese-American composer Zhou Tian's "Night Tour," a vibrant violin concerto, which will be performed by violinist Danielle Belen.

Zhou Tian, a professor at Michigan State University, is a Grammy-nominated composer who was born in China but now resides in Michigan. A former winner of the Sphinx Competition, Danielle Belen is a now member of faculty at the University of Michigan.

Led by Conductor and Music Director Nan Washburn, now in her 26th season, the Philharmonic will offer an afternoon also focused around the "Romantic" era music of Johannes Brahms and will include his lyrical "Symphony No. 1 in C Minor." Considered one of the most romantic pieces written by Brahms, it took him over 14 years to complete.

The concert opens with "Dance of the Tumblers" from "The Snow Maiden" by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. This will be performed as a side-by-side with the Michigan Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), giving the top group of the MPYO the wonderful and unique opportunity to share a stand with a professional musician and perform together.
