Jan. 31, 2012 - PRLog -- As a part of Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc’s Experimental Design Program, SEM Link’s Founder and Executive Director Ms. Tokiwa T. Smith served as a judge for the 10th Annual Greene Scholars Science Fair.  The fair was on January 28, 2012, from 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at Cypress Semiconductor headquarters located at 198 Champion Court in San Jose, California. The Greene Scholars Program Science Fair showcased projects covering a range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines of approximately 90 students in grades 3-12. On Sunday, January 29, the Scholars were honored and the winners announced at the Science Fair Awards Banquet held at the IBEW Hall located at 2125 Canoas Garden Avenue in San Jose, California.

SEM Link’s Experimental Design Program teaches students how to design and conduct experiments for math and science fairs  utilizing research, laboratory and scientific literacy skills gained through individual and group learning opportunities as well as mentoring. The programs that are available through this program are the Experimental Design Program Handbook (available on our website), The Mentoring Program and Math and Science Fair Judging. “Students engaging in scientific research early in the educational experience is critical to their academic achievement and career exploration in STEM.” says Tokiwa T. Smith Founder and Executive Director “A science fair project is one of those outside of the classroom learning experiences that teaches students skills that are transferable to academic achievement in other subjects and builds a child’s confidence in their ability to excel academically. It is our responsibility as adults to encourage and support these academic pursuits with the same fervor that we support athletics or performing arts”.  Schools and community organizations that want to request judges for their science fair or other STEM competitions can do so by completing the STEM Fair Judge Request form on our website http://www.semsuccess.org/forms.html

ABOUT GREENE SCHOLARS PROGRAM
The Dr. Frank S. Greene Scholars Program is sponsored by the California Alliance of African-American Educators and is a long-term initiative that promotes the development of a community of college-bound Scholars focused on extending their academic gifts in science and math. The program’s purpose is to increase the number of African American youth choosing STEM career paths through high school, college and into their professional lives. The Greene Scholars Program nurtures its Scholars from entrance into the program through high school graduation by providing culturally responsive programming for them and their parents; delivering hands-on math, science and technology experiences and workshops; conducting annual science fairs and engineering competitions; participating in entrepreneurial/leadership programs; and offer college and standardized tests preparation, core subject tutoring, field trips and computer literacy workshops. Scholars have advanced from the Greene Scholars Program Science Fair to the regional Synopsys Silicon Valley Science and Technology Championships at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center and then onto the California State Science Fair in Los Angeles and even the International Science Engineering Fair.
