An Interactive Session and Public Awareness Program by Grant Medical Foundation Ruby Hall Clinic -On Ways of avoiding a Heart Attack-

June 9, 2008 - PRLog -- Grant Medical Foundation Ruby Hall Clinic organized an interactive session and Public Awareness Program today i.e. 29th April 2008, with World renowned Cardiologist Dr, Sameer Mehta from Florida, USA and leading cardiologists of India, Dr. Ravi Gulati and Dr. Shirish (MS) Hiremath, at Nehru Memorial Hall.

The Specialists, through this interactive workshop, showed several ways of evading the chances of a heart attack. According to them, even untreated leg pain could put people at the risk of strokes and heart diseases.

Many elderly people, specially Diabetics, who experience leg pain when they walk, pain or numbness in the legs or feet, or cramps and muscle fatigue in the legs, may be suffering from peripheral vascular disease (PVD) or lower leg PVD, a common, but under diagnosed condition affecting millions of people and a major cause of stroke and heart attacks.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Shirish (M.S) Hiremath, Director, Dept of Cardiology & Endovascular Intervention, Ruby Hall, Pune, said, “Lower leg PVD is a common syndrome that affects a large proportion of most adult populations worldwide, with a prevalence over 10% in people aged more than 40 years and increasingly so in patients with associated risk factors like Coronary Artery Disease, Smoker, Diabetics”.

Fortunately for patients with lower leg PVD, the disease, if detected and treated early, could usually be resolved.

Dr Dhanesh Kamerkar, Vascular Surgeon, RubyHall, Pune was of the opinion that, “The more people know about the disease, the greater the chances are of preventing disability and serious consequence.”

Unfortunately, many people with the early symptoms of lower leg PVD, especially leg pain on walking, assume that this is just part of getting older and do not seek medical attention until they become severely debilitated.

Thus, this Interactive Session and Awareness Program was to bring to the notice of the common man that sometimes even the most ordinary ailments and pains could lead to life threatening and the most complicated disorders, as also to inform them that all their big and minor pains and illness need to be checked up and not to be ignored.
