Companies Use Innovative Trends To Drive Sales During Economic Downturn

Hobby Works to offer “No Tax Weekend” at all of their stores during Black Friday

Nov. 19, 2008 - PRLog -- As the economic downturn continues to hit retailers hard, many are finding themselves offering sales and discounts that they have never offered before.  Hobby Works is no different, as they are having their first ever No Tax Weekend Sale during Thanksgiving Weekend at all of their locations.

As part of the No Tax Weekend, everything sold in Hobby Works’ stores will be tax free – even items on sale.  The Hobby Works No Tax Weekend Sale lasts from Friday November 28th (Black Friday) through Sunday November 30th.

The No Tax Weekend Sale was the idea of Hobby Works owner, Mike Brey.  “I wanted to do something new for this holiday shopping season and I thought that the No Tax Weekend would be something our customers would enjoy,” said Brey.  “This year, with Thanksgiving being on such a late date (November 27th), the selling season is short as it is, so hopefully customers can take advantage of our sale during Black Friday Weekend and complete their holiday shopping before it gets too late.”

Hobby Works currently has four store locations (Laurel, Bel Air and Rockville, Maryland and Fairfax, Virginia) as well as its own distribution center in Laurel.  Brey bought Hobby Works back in 1993 and has used his experience as a manager for large retailers such as Sam Goody, Tandy and Macy’s to build Hobby Works to what it is today.

Hobby Works is one of many retailers trying unique tactics to gain business during the shopping season.  The Maryland Retailers Association recently announced that it is not predicting any sales increases for the first time in 22 years, which is causing tension among retailers.  Despite the current economic climate, Brey expects to have a busy holiday selling season.  “Christmas is still going to come despite the state of the market,” said Brey.  “We are looking to do our part to help consumers any way we can.”
