Suzan Lewis on Jerry Lewis the Humanitarian; It begins At Home

Suzan Lewis, the biological daughter of entertainer Jerry Lewis, voices her opinion about the comedian's selection by the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences for the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Dec. 18, 2008 - PRLog -- When asked by the producer of a nationally syndicated TV news program about the selection of her father, Jerry Lewis, for the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, Suzan Lewis responded, "Jerry Lewis has reportedly raised more than two billion dollars to help in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy and associated diseases. That probably makes him the most successful fundraiser in entertainment history. I don't believe that classifies him as a 'humanitarian.' That kind of thing begins at home." Suzan Lewis learned in 1976 from her mother, that Jerry Lewis is her biological father. In 1980, Suzan spent one day with her dad in France, but since then, he hasn't responded to her calls or letters.

In the early 1990s Suzan was the victim of a nearly fatal automobile accident which left her disabled. Due to her disabilities, the now 56 year old, former New York debutante, found her life in a downward spiral resulting in her being homeless. Suzan's famous father has been made aware of her plight. Suzan currently lives in a house in Philadelphia arranged for her by her manager's family, and in her own words, "I'm on my way back!"

Suzan, who is determined to make a comeback, and become a productive citizen, says, "While my father is a fundraiser, I want to be an 'awareness raiser.' Using my comedic talents handed down to me by my dad, I want to entertain and at the same time carry my story to the public so that they will understand that homeless people are not usually there because they want to be. Some people are just one paycheck away from living on the street. People sleeping in cars and on park benches need understanding and help so that they can become self reliant, responsible human beings.

Suzan Lewis has begun making personal appearances, and hopes one day to have a national platform to bring her inspirational story to the country. Her website is, www.SuzanLewis.com .
