Aug. 13, 2009 - PRLog -- Thousands of people from across the U.S. are expected to descend on Bicentennial Park for the 2009 South Florida Rally for Recovery! on Sept. 12. The rally is designed to raise awareness that addiction to drugs and alcohol is a treatable disease and to celebrate people currently in recovery.

Scheduled for this day-long event is a walk in support of recovery, a festival for the entire family and a music concert. The concert will feature an all-star lineup of music performers, highlighted by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members Eric Burdon and The Animals.

The 2009 South Florida Rally for Recovery! is being hosted by InTheRooms.com, a rapidly growing social networking website designed specifically for people currently in recovery, those who are seeking help to find recovery, and the family, friends and allies of people in recovery around the world. Since its launch in October 2008, the online community has registered more than 40,000 members who just recently surpassed 120,000 collective years of recovery time, a figure that is constantly increasing.

Participants in the Miles of Quarters Red Ribbon Walk will go over the MacArthur Causeway on Biscayne Bay, around Watson Island, and back to the park for the remainder of the day’s activities. Cost for the walk is $9 per person and includes admission to the entire day of festivities, including the concert.

The festival rundown includes speakers who will address various recovery issues, an expo with products and services for the recovery community, a kids zone with games and exhibits, food from local restaurants, and raffles and giveaways throughout the day.

Eric Burdon and The Animals were one of the most noteworthy bands during the British Invasion of the 1960s. They had 25 Top 40 hits, including classics such as “House of the Rising Sun,” “It’s My Life,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place” and “Spill the Wine.” The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

In addition, singer Richie Supa, formerly of Aerosmith, will perform his single, In The Rooms, which won a 2009 PRISM Award. The concert also will spotlight singers in recovery who are members of the InTheRooms.com community. Local celebrity disc jockey Footy of Footy’s Wing Ding will serve as master of ceremonies.

The South Florida Rally for Recovery! is being held in conjunction with National Alcohol and Drug Abuse Addiction Recovery Month during September. The Recovery Month observance highlights the societal benefits of substance abuse treatment, lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery from substance abuse in all its forms is possible.

“There’s no better way for us to celebrate National Recovery Month than to host an incredible event like the South Florida Rally for Recovery!” said Ron Tannebaum, CEO and cofounder of InTheRooms.com. “The schedule of activities for the day will enable everyone there to support recovery advocacy and help put a positive face on recovery from alcoholism and drug abuse, while enjoying themselves at the same time.”

Proceeds from the 2009 South Florida Rally for Recovery! will go to the In The Rooms Foundation, a 501c(3) not-for-profit charitable organization that is committed to providing education, prevention, awareness, treatment scholarships and work with organizations to help people recover from all addiction-related diseases.
