In addition to the conventional ‘white cube’, the exhibition will take place in a fabric workshop, joined to the gallery space. The merging of these two diverse surroundings sets out to investigate how we perceive contemporary art in a hybrid of contexts, questioning the effects and implications it can have on the art displayed in such locations. The exhibition will invite us to contemplate the blurred boundaries between foreground and background, the juxtaposition of forms and structural elements of stage sets. Employing a range of mediums from film to frozen sculpture, ALTERNATING BETWEEN THE TWO will explore the idea of subsequent and continuous exchanges between notions of environments, context and meaning. Taking inspiration from varied subject matters such as collage, performance, and the precious and profane, the exhibition will encompass artwork that transcends traditional structures of display. ALTERNATING BETWEEN THE TWO promises to give a unique and relevant insight into Bristol based art, showcasing a vibrant and dynamic mix of practice that falls between both student level and internationally recognised artist status.
