What to Look for When you Buy an Extended Warranty Plan – Ford and Nissan

Extended warranties are often the first thing people put off buying. However in many cases of people keeping their vehicles longer an extended warranty is necessary.

Dec. 2, 2009 - PRLog -- Known as Exclusionary Auto Warranties, a bumper to bumper warranty gives you the most peace of mind because they offer the most comprehensive coverage and are fully backed by reputable companies like Ford and Nissan.  It’s just easier to tell you what’s NOT covered with a Ford or Nissan Extended Warranty than to list the hundreds and hundreds of items that are.  If it’s not on the “excluded list”, it’s covered – that’s it, you’re done.

When shopping for an extended warranty, it’s not always best to shop based on the lowest price alone.  Will the warranty company pay the repair facility directly, or will you have to submit a claim for reimbursement of charges you had to pay out of pocket?  Are you guaranteed to benefit from genuine manufacturer parts or your vehicle, or did the repair shop only get authorization for aftermarket or, worse yet, used parts?  Is the warranty transferrable to a purchaser when/if you decide to sell your vehicle, thus making it much more marketable, or did you spend money on something that can no longer be used?

Extended warranty companies also offer a variety to deductibles, ranging from $0 on up. For example, with a Nissan Extended Warranty, their standard deductible is $50 and with a Ford Extended Warranty, $100 is standard.  Both offer programs with $0 deductible; but you have to ask yourself, is it worth spending the extra $200 to $300 in order to avoid a deductible?  Well, think about it this way; with an additional cost of $300 for a Nissan Extended Warranty at $50 deductible, you would have to experience six (6) major repairs to your vehicle before that portion of your warranty cost pays for itself.

One thing to keep in mind is an Extended Warranty is simply that; an extension of the manufacturer’s factory warranty.  For example; your Nissan has a standard 36month/36,000mile warranty.  When you “extend” your warranty to 72month/100,000miles, it does not mean you will be adding 6 years or 100,000 miles to your coverage.  It means you are extending that coverage, adding the difference; 36months/64,000 miles.

Tip of the day: If your dealer is offering a rebate incentive to purchase your vehicle, take that rebate amount in the form of cash.  Then turn around and use that “bonus money” toward the purchase of your Extended Warranty on your new Ford or Nissan.  It’s like getting it for FREE, and who doesn’t like Free?
