China’s healthcare industry is about to change dramatically. The increasing urban population, increasing aging population, and increasing prevalence of lifestyle diseases demand it. The government recently granted the healthcare sector 850 billion Yuan (USD 124 billion) for reform. These factors make the healthcare sector in China ready to outperform all other sectors in the country in terms of growth.

Burden of Disease in China: Economic development in China has brought changes from a traditional to a modernized lifestyle. Chinese people eat more high-fat, processed foods and exercise less.  People who previously walked or cycled now drive cars or ride motorcycles.  This is driving a huge increase in the number of people with chronic diseases. Chronic diseases now account for an estimated 80% of deaths and 70% of disability-adjusted life-years lost in China. The five leading causes of death are cancer, cerebral vascular disease, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease and injury. (source: Michigan Center for Public Health Preparedness) China also has the second largest diabetes population in the world, which is one of the most serious and costly health conditions.  According to WHO (World Health Organization), in the year 2000 China had over 20 million people suffering from diabetes, and they predict that by 2030 that number will reach over 42 million.

Government Academic Support: The Chinese government has made innovation in science and technology a strategic priority. Not only is the government injecting money into health reform, but they are encouraging innovation and luring Chinese scientists home.  As a New York Times article from January 2010 put it, “The scientists are lured by their patriotism, their desire to serve as catalysts for change and their belief that the Chinese government will back them.”

China’s Wealthy Population: Another driving force behind increased spending on healthcare is the number of wealthy in China.  China is home to the 4th largest number of millionaires in the world, with 825,000 individuals achieving personal wealth of more than 100 million rmb. (source: Hurun Report)  With this growth in wealth comes a surge in self-confidence, driving China’s wealthy to continue to spend.  The cosmetic industry shows that a lot of money is spent in looking better, with total sales in 2009 reaching RMB 80 billion.  The people who shop for luxury brands, eat in first class restaurants, and stay in 7 star hotels, they do this not just for the product, but for the level of service they receive, because they are treated as an individual and not just a number.  Where do you go for that level of service for the most important aspect of life; your health?

Demand for Quality Healthcare: China has a tremendous need for high quality health care, and a huge number of high-net worth and emerging wealth individuals with the money to pay for it.  Within China, where do people go for the best medical treatment?

World Anti-Aging™ (W.A.) has identified this need that China has for integrative health care known as anti-aging medicine.  Anti-aging medicine, also known as regenerative medicine, makes it possible to slow, stop and substantially reverse the physical deterioration and diseases which are commonly considered “natural” aging. Such progress allows not just for improved looks and an extended existence, but for the enjoyment of optimum wellness and quality of life.

Over the last three years, W.A. Chairman Dr Shu Li has been carefully hand-picking a team of physicians and scientists from China and abroad who are at the forefront of anti-aging medicine, and designing a 7-Star health care platform to meet the demands of China’s wealthy, discerning population who are seeking superior health care that will cater to their specific needs in their quest for a better quality life.  These doctors are already well known in their established practices around the world and accustomed to attending to a demanding clientele from Hollywood, Politics, and Professional Sports.

W.A. Stem Cell Industries: One of the most significant breakthroughs in regenerative medicine is adult stem cell therapy. Imagine, a young quadriplegic man regaining use of his hands; a little girl born blind gaining sight; a stroke victim recovering his motion and speech.  Adult stem cell therapy is already having these remarkable results in clinical trials in China and internationally. The Chinese government recognizes the potential of adult stem cell medicine, and has put in motion plans to regulate and monitor the safe application of such medicine.  China will build Asia's biggest base to develop uses for stem cell medical technology, which the Health Minister Chen Zhu described as having huge potential for development. (source: Reuters, April 2009)

W.A. is the exclusive Greater China strategic partner of the highly reputable stem cell company Stemedica.  Stemedica Cell Technologies, Inc. was founded as the result of a personal commitment by Executive Chairman Roger Howe and CEO Maynard Howe to find alternative therapy for a family member who had been left paralyzed from an automobile accident and whose recovery through stem cell therapy provided the impetus for establishing Stemedica.

With headquarters in San Diego and Switzerland, World Anti-Aging is now set to develop a “gold standard” of stem cell research and development within Greater China, implementing clinical trials with qualified hospitals in accordance with all FDA and local protocols. We would like to see the full potential met in developing stem cells that safely and effectively treat patients suffering from Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, spinal cord injuries, and other age related degenerative conditions, as well as diabetes, burns, scars, and stroke.  As such we are committed to a manufacturing process that undergoes extensive testing and puts the welfare of the patient first at all times.

Research & Development: On October 27 2010 W.A. signed an agreement with the government of Wuxi, securing space in Wuxi’s Life Science and Technology Industrial Park. The property will house research & development, manufacturing and storage of the W.A. stem cells.  Also located in Wuxi will be the head office of W.A.’s Biotech division, and the W.A. Academy.

W.A. Academy of Medical Research & Science: The W.A. Academy trains and certifies doctors across China to administer W.A. stem cells and anti-aging treatments.  It will also host physician seminars, anti-aging conferences, and send doctors around the globe to research new anti-aging technologies.

W.A. Center of Regenerative Health Care - Shanghai: Set in the middle of one of the most tranquil settings in Central Shanghai, the W.A. Center of Regenerative Health Care will be a haven in which to receive the highest standard of international health care.  The location, both private and secluded, will be the first of its kind in China, focussing on the whole person, delivered by international physicians, in a luxurious, relaxing setting.  Following the pattern of our existing centers, the patient experience will be centered on privacy, dignity, personalization and comfort. The location, natural exterior, well thought-out interior design, and highest level of service will truly make this a 7-star Health Care Center. The center will open Q2 2010; full details to be released early April 2010.

Derek Muhs, CEO of World Anti-Aging concludes, “We are excited about developing this new generation of healthcare in China and helping people to enjoy happier, healthier and longer lives.”
