Backup plan for CAT Entrance Exam

April 8, 2010 - PRLog -- An aggregate of 2,100 lucky ones will make it to any of seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The rest 2,13,000 out of 2,15,000 who took the CAT entrance exam, would need to look elsewhere to come good in their careers.

To those who make it, sky is the limit, who do not, let us together examine as to how big or small is the disappointment of not making it. What draw the aspirants to CAT are the IIM placements and the salary offers. While the print media reported an offer of 1.44 crores to perhaps one candidate, the average salary offer at IIM Ahmadabad was Rs.12.17 lacs and 12.70 lacs at IIM Calcutta, but considerably lower in the case of other IIMs.

Then there are XLRIs, SP Jain at Mumbai, Symbiosis, Narsee Munjee at Mumbai, IMT at Ghaziabad, MDI at Gurgaon, Faculty of Management Science, FMS at Delhi and scores of others who offer more or less equivalent program quality, if not the same brand value. Given the progressive stance of Government of India in case of higher education, 2010 is likely to see several more world class institutions that would deliver value to the students and through strong Industry-Academic alignments, offer assured placements at fair salary offers.

It is also important to understand that while a good start at the conclusion of your MBA or PGDM is advantageous, it does not preclude other from making it good, while on the job. If you are good and deserving, you would make a mark in your job assignment and could make up for initial slight disadvantage of not entering any of IIMs.
