Smartphones – Networks in Danger of Running out of Airwaves

The announcement of the impending General Election on May 6th has already set the pulses racing, but experts within the mobiles and smartphones industry fear that its networks could be in danger of running out of airwaves during the drama.

April 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Britain’s mobile networks are already running low on capacity and there looks likely to be further strain on the airwaves as the government’s Digital Economy Billl – aimed at liberalising the airwaves further – appears to have been put on the back burner.

This poses a problem for smartphones (http://www.foneshop.com) users, with mobile data traffic growing at exponential rates by almost 200% last year according to watchdog, Ofcom. The rapid evolution of mobile services also sees 4G moving fast on the horizon; however Britain’s connections could come to a complete standstill prior to the demand for the next generation of handsets and connectivity.

The government has consistently targeted 2012 as the watershed for universal broadband to be available to all across the UK. However, this could prove elusive if mobile network capacities are not upgraded sufficiently to continue to provide wireless broadband in areas where there is little or no cabling.

There remains opposition to the Digital Economy Bill, with 20,000 smartphones (http://www.foneshop.com) and internet users signing an online petition objecting to the proposals. However, the worrying reality is that the petition may not even be visible next year if networks have no room left in the inn.
