That’s according to a survey of the UK’s entrepreneurs


“The3rdi” online business resource surveyed its readers and asked “What qualities are critical in a Leader today?

The response, from an overwhelming 78% of them was – INTEGRITY.

They rejected experience, education, and even generosity, putting integrity above all else.

Coming a close second was COMMUNICATION (75%) and MOTIVATION (69%).

Respondents were given 20 key qualities to choose from and these three were the clear winners.

“I am both surprised and pleased that “integrity” came out on top” says business coach and co-founder Phil Birch, “I have had the fortune to work in businesses of all sizes and in truth my own integrity was in almost permanent conflict and it seemed the integrity of the leaders of these businesses was also conflicted. So to see business owners putting integrity at the top of the list is inspiring.”

At the bottom of the list QUALIFICATIONS (58%), UNIQUENESS (40%) and SINGLE-MINDEDNESS (38%) were the qualities that were considered least important for a leader today.

“In the past qualities like these would have been considered key for a leader, but in the 21st Century leaders need the “softer” leadership skills that came top in the survey,” explains Phil. “Management Guru Peter Drucker once said “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things”. The results of this survey seem to confirm this and show us that it’s not just “what” you do but “the way that you do it. Interestingly generosity also came low on the list of critical qualities. I have always considered this an important trait but it seems that generosity without integrity is an empty gift”

The 3rdi is an online resource for women in business offering tips and advice. It recognises that women do business differently from men. The name “The 3rdi” comes from that extra “intuition” that women have; their intrinsic ability to empathise, communicate, share, spread their ideas and “network.”  The latest issue is dedicated to leadership.
