Course in Cadaver Arthoplasy

Course in Cadaver Arthoplasy is designed to introduce the art of joint replacement surgery to budding orthopaedic surgeons from across the country.

June 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Further investing in medical education, the Department of Orthopaedics, AIIMS, recently concluded a two-day course in cadaver arthoplasy, which they claim to be the first in India. Not only is this cost-effective to pursue, as compared to its cost abroad, but also is a structured training programme giving a hands-on experience. The course is meant for budding orthopaedic surgeons who want to excel in replacement surgeries.

The course is designed to introduce the art of joint replacement surgery to budding orthopaedic surgeons from across the country. It is a standardised course and has inputs from eminent faculty members drawn from top medical colleges and practising surgeons both domestic as well as international. Participants are given a better understanding of the art of joint replacement, thus, enhancing their surgery skills and patient care,” informed CS Yadav, associate professor, hip and knee replacement surgeon, department of orthopaedics, AIIMS. He added: “The cost of pursuing this course is Rs 2,500, whereas abroad, it can cost from Rs 3 to 5 lakh.”

There are few institutes worldwide which offer such courses. Usually people follow conventional methods of learning (through videos, lecturers or through operating on saw bones). We have introduced it first in India on cadavers to provide the real experience. It’s the best possible way of learning and experiencing it practically.

They are also in the process to make it a regular course after every six to nine months. Also, he added, “We would be introducing more such courses which are completely dedicated to knee and hip surgeries based on symposiums and workshops. We have also invited various foreign faculties like Ross Crowford from Australia and Teo Yee Hong from Singapore to share their experiences on the subject.”

Talking about the demand for surgeons today, Yadav said: “The demand for total joint replacements is expected to rise dramatically in the next few years. Experts are predicting there won’t be enough orthopaedic surgeons. More and more young patients having painful or deformed joints are going for joint replacements today and this demand will soon outpace the number of surgeons who can perform the procedures skillfully. The challenge is related to more skilled professionals in this field. This is a booming career.”

The next course is scheduled in December. A website will be launched soon, and students can apply online. However, the minimum qualification required is MS with three years of experience.
