Salinas Mayor Donohue Salutes Police Chief Fetherolf's Role in Comprehensive Peace Strategy

Aug. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- SALINAS, CA - Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue gave special recognition to Police Chief Louis Fetherolf at a community event Monday, noting that the head of the Salinas Police Department exemplifies the city's strategic approach to fighting crime.

"As we've been building our peace strategy, you've often heard me talk about being smart on crime, and about how Prevention, Intervention and Enforcement need to work together," Mayor Donohue said. "Some of you may wonder what that would look like. Chief Fetherolf is an example of what that looks like."

Mayor Donohue noted that Chief Fetherolf will be honored Thursday night (8/19/2010) as Public Official of the Year by the Salinas Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The mayor also stated that the city's commitment to a comprehensive law enforcement and peace strategy "has not flagged . . . Rest assured the work goes on."

Mayor Donohue, joined by city officials, business and educational leaders and area residents, made his remarks during a ribbon-cutting Monday for a new, safer walkway at the back of Alisal High School, near the scene of the killing of a 15-year-old boy last year.

What was previously a weed-infested, frequently littered stretch of land now features security cameras, flowers, and a paved path. Located at the end of Burke Street, it will be used daily by students arriving and leaving the school.

Donohue said this project also exemplifies the peace strategy, which includes a "neighborhood by neighborhood" approach.

Alco Water Service paid the $75,000 for the cost of the walkway and two surveillance cameras.

Dennis Donohue was first elected mayor in 2006, and was unopposed for re-election in in 2008. He is seeking his third two-year term this November.
