Follow on Google News | New Tesco Lotus proposed for PhuketProposals have been submitted for a new Tesco Lotus development in Phuket, close to the Thalang intersection and thirty kilometres from the first Tesco Lotus supermarket which opened in 1999.
By: Rebecca Smith Tesco Lotus was established in 1998 as a joint venture between Charoen Pokphand [CP] and the British supermarket giant Tesco. CP eventually sold their shares in 2003. While developers have earmarked only 1,000 square metres of the site for the supermarket, the main building is expected to be around 20,000 square metres in size. Large areas for parking have already been proposed and will provide space for over seven hundred cars and five hundred motorcycles. The Phuket Governor’s special committee for the environment was officially notified last week about the proposals. A preliminary survey has already been carried out with 64.5 percent of local residents already being in favour of the new project. Phuket has seen supermarkets and convenience stores spring up quickly over the past few years as small villages combine to form single urban areas Tesco Lotus already have a total of 55 supermarkets, 14 Lotus markets, 15 value stores and 189 express stores throughout Thailand.
