October is Fire Prevention Month, are you ready?

Fire; it’s something most of us deal with in one way or another every day. Fire prevention on the other hand, is something we rarely consider.

Sept. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Cartersville, Atlanta, Georgia -  From lightning to cooking, from lighters to clothes dryers, most of us deal with fire or potential fire producing items every day.  But really, how “fire conscious” are you?  Fire is one of the leading causes of loss of life and property in the world; it’s also one of the most preventable.  Here’s a 12-step plan that can help you make great strides in preventing and possibly eliminating a fire if the need arises.  Step 1) Never leave candles burning unattended.  Step 2) Keep lighters and matches out of the reach of children.  Step 3) Never leave food cooking on the stove unattended.  Step 4) Never leave towels or potholders near a burner.  Step 5) Never leave a clothes dryer running while you’re away from home.  Step 6) Never leave appliances, lamps, or electronics plugged in around curtains or sheers.  Step 7) Make sure to change your furnace filters regularly.  Step 8) NEVER smoke in bed.  Step 9) Purchase at least one fire extinguisher and check it monthly making sure the gauge needle is in the green.  Step 10) Purchase smoke detectors.  Check them monthly to make sure they’re working properly.  Step 11) Change your smoke detector batteries every 6 months.  Step 12) Develop an go over with your family an evacuation plan in case you have a fire.  By implementing these 12 steps you truly have a good chance of never having an accidental fire start in your home; and if you do, you’ll have the equipment and knowledge to protect you and your family.
