Gomez Set for SRL Title Run at Vegas

Oct. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Jonathon Gomez of Twin Falls, Idaho is on the eve of his first touring series championship heading into the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour finale at The Bullring in Las Vegas this Saturday night. Gomez holds a 61-point advantage over former Southwest Tour champion Jim Pettit II. In two previous races at The Bullring, Gomez has notched finishes of second and third and he is hoping his third visit to the fast 3/8-mile banked oval will result in a victory, but more importantly the series title.

Through nine races this season, Gomez has scored seven consecutive top five finishes with only one finish outside the top ten. His other finish, in the season opener back in March, resulted in an 8th place performance. Gomez has been the model of consistency all season completing 99% of all laps contested and an average finish of 5.4.

All Gomez needs to do in order to clinch the championship in the 200-lap event is to finish 14th or better and the title is his. Based on his performance all season, the title is looking like a reality. The race on Saturday will be the longest in series history at 200-laps but will also be the richest in history with the winner's share at over $6,000.

"We have worked hard all season to get to this point, so we are not going to do anything to let it slip away," Gomez offered. "Ron Copeland and the entire crew are ready and since we have run really good at Vegas in the past we feel real good about our chances Saturday night."

Knowing that the title is on the line, don't look for Gomez to take it easy. "We plan to qualify up front and hopefully be able to run up front the entire event," Gomez said.

In ten career SRL starts, Gomez has scored two wins, eight top five and nine top ten performances along with one quick time award.

Gomez also sits in the sixth position in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series-West standings, 14-points out of fifth place and 44-points behind  fourth place. After eleven races this season he has scored three top five and six top ten performances with his best result of second place at Iowa Speedway back in May. The final event for the NKNPS is Saturday, November 13 at the one-mile oval of Phoenix International Raceway as part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend.

Jonathon Gomez is in his fourth year of competitive racing having won local track titles at Magic Valley Speedway in Twin Falls and competed in various Late Model events the past couple of seasons.  He has started 19 NASCAR K&N Pro Series races since 2008 scoring ten top ten finishes and is in his first full-time season in the NKNPS. Gomez has averaged a 10.6 finishing position through ten races and has completed 1,425 of 1,430 laps (99.6%) contested so far this season to lead all competitors.
