If your gums are not healthy, and are providing little tissue resistance, these bacteria can get into the blood stream, increasing a person’s risk for heart disease and/or stroke. Initially, the concern was raised back in the late 1980’s. Studies were conducted in Europe that presented an association between heart disease and gum disease. Further studies eventually confirmed these preliminary findings. How does this occur? Basically, when an infection (inflammation) Each of us should be concerned over gum disease, get regularly checked and develop good oral hygiene habits. But, anyone with heart disease, a family history of heart disease or stroke, people that have had heart valve problems, or heart valve replacements, should definitely take special care with their oral hygiene and get their gum health evaluated frequently.
